That clicking sound from your hard drive is alarming — and rightly so. It usually means something has gone wrong internally. But before you panic, the good news is that in most cases, a clicking drive can be successfully recovered — if you act carefully.

What causes a hard drive to click?

Clicking almost always points to read head failure. The read heads are tiny components that float just above the spinning platters to read your data. When they fail — due to a drop, age, or a power surge — they can no longer find their position correctly, causing that repetitive clicking or clunking sound.

What should you do immediately?

The most important thing: switch the drive off and don’t try to use it again. Every time a failing drive powers on, the damaged heads can scratch the platter surfaces, making recovery harder or impossible. Don’t run recovery software on a clicking drive — it will make things worse.
